Before You Shave

Just before we cut to the chase with the best shaving cream and best shaving oil, it’s important to take a few precautionary measures pre-shave. Lack of preparation can lead to shaving bumps so make sure you exfoliate.

Exfoliation removes dead skin cells, provides you with a deep cleanse and leaves behind a smoother skin surface. You should be doing this twice a week to improve your skin complexion, and importantly before you shave.

Exfoliating helps to lift hairs to the surface of the skin and can help prevent ingrown hairs. There are a couple of ways you can exfoliate.

  1. Use a facial cleansing brush. These can be electric or manual devices that can be used with your face wash. You simply wet the bristles and use upward circular movements to work across the chin, jawline and cheeks. There are some issues with facial cleansing brushes.A lot of them are quite spenny and if you’re sporadic with your skincare, the cost might be more than it’s worth. Those with sensitive skin might feel that the brushes are too abrasive on their skin too. If you’re in the latter, then we suggest the below instead
  1. A face scrub also physically exfoliates the skin. Our Original Face Scrub and Sensitive Face Scrub are both gentle exfoliants that will remove dead skin cells. Smooth a small amount on to dry skin, massage the face and scrub! Rinse with warm water and pat dry

Which Lube?

The best type of men’s shaving lubricant is a matter of personal taste and purpose. Do you need shaving precision? Do you favour an oil or a cream? Do you need hydration or precision? Let us explain how different shaving products suit different shaving needs.

The function of a lubricant is to ease the shaving process by providing a cushion between your skin and your razor. Whilst gels are great for those with oily skin, we don’t want you to forget the benefits of an old-fashioned shaving cream. Some of the best shaving creams on the market at the moment have a modern twist on the traditional cream. Our Original Shave Cream is glycerine based. It’s been designed specifically to keep skin moisturised during your shave and boasts camelina oil, green tea and aloe vera. It’s common for men to experience dryness (especially when they’re transitioning from a full beard to clean shaven), so a cream is a great option to help tackle this.

If you’re navigating around facial hair, then you must have a shave oil amongst your wet shaving products. They’re fantastic as they go on to the skin transparently allowing for precision. Original Shave Oil (£5.50) is all that is needed to deliver a smooth and close shave. This formula contains sweet almond oil, coconut oil and camelina oil.

The Razor

The best razor for men would have a pivoting design, a lubricating strip, a precision trimmer (because nose hairs are thoroughly unappealing) and sharp steel blades. Luckily, Bulldog’s Original Bamboo Razor ticks all those boxes and more.

Two billion plastic razors are sent to landfill each year in the USA alone (according to the US Environmental Protection Agency). With this in mind, it’s clear that the global razor industry needs to rethink its environmental footprint. Millions have been spent building a sharper razor and the reality is that most blades are now sharp enough.

The 5 tempered steel blades, lubricating strip with aloe vera and flexible head provides everything you need for a close and comfortable shave.

What sets our razor apart from the rest is the focus on lowering its environmental impact. From the natural bamboo handle (which is also aesthetically pleasing), to the packaging that’s made from fully recycled stock, using only environmentally friendly inks.

Our advice? Don’t use any other razor (not just saying that because we’re biased, we’ve already won three awards for this product)!

After You Shave

You’re not finished yet pal. If you’ve shaved your beard off for the first time in what feels like eternity, the skin is likely to look slightly pale, unloved and grey. Even if you’re no stranger to the razor, your skin is likely to be slightly tender, dry and sometimes even red so you must use a moisturiser after shaving.

Balms provide you with moisture and tend to sink in to the skin rapidly so if you’re a man that hates the feeling of a thick moisturiser on your skin, try out our Sensitive After Shave Balm.
