How to Care for Your Skin After Shaving

Use Lubrication

Razor burn is a common male skincare issue and super uncomfortable. We all face it from time to time but if redness and dreadful stinging sensations are feeling too familiar, you need to rethink your shaving strategy and post shave care.

Which after shave balm should you be using? What’s the best aftershave balm for sensitive skin? How do you prevent recurring razor burn? You may think it’s a straightforward process, and one you have done since you were a teenager, but so many men are not giving their skin the best start to the day.

When it comes to razor burn, we bet you’ve searched high and low for the best lotion for after shaving, however to prevent the burn in the first place, you need to use a skin protecting lubricant. These help your razor glide across your skin with ease so that you are less likely to pull and scrape your skin. That’s where your shave balm comes in. Your shave balm acts as a barrier between your razor and your skin, but still allows the blades to move freely over the hairs, removing them.

Bulldog’s hydrating Original Shave Gel has been formulated specially to help your razor glide over the skin and deliver a close shave. It contains aloe vera green tea and camelina oil.

Be Gentle

Sorry to be all negative, but we’re going to give you a couple of do’s and don’ts now but it’s for your own good.

Don’t rush- We know that you can be pushed for time sometimes. Especially in the mornings. You can speed up a shave without running a razor over your face in a speedy fashion. This is a recipe for irritation and razor burn. Instead, make sure your razor blade is new (more on that later) so hair removal is swift and easy in one stroke. Use a thin layer of shaving gel. Thick layers slow down your shave and clog your blades faster, causing you to rinse more often than needed.

Finally, exfoliate with a scrub the night before you shave. This will allow you to skip prep in the morning. Have a light hand- Don’t press too hard on your skin when you shave. Go with the grain and apply light pressure.

Swap Blades Regularly

Our blades have been designed to last between 5-10 shaves. This depends on how much of your face you shave. For example, if you have lots of facial hair and you just shave to keep it neat, your blade will be likely to last longer as it’s not worked as hard as it would have if you were always clean shaven.

Man using face product

A dull razor is more likely to pull at your facial hair instead of cutting straight through it. This can lead to irritation and razor burn. To help your razor last longer, rinse the head after shaving with warm water and store it in a dry place.

There are lots of other reasons you should regularly change your blades too! Your razor blades will have a build up of grime and bacteria over time which may lead to infection if you’re not careful. Dead skin cells, old shaving cream and loose whiskers can all find their way into the nooks and crannies of your razor, creating a not-so-nice environment – one you definitely don’t want to share with your face. Not to mention it’s just more difficult to shave with a blunt blade. You’ll end up going over the same bits again and again, which has a bad effect on your skin. As we said, the chances of infection are multiplied with an old razor blade. Tiny tears in the skin, invisible to the naked eye, could collect all sorts of nasty stuff that’ll leave the skin struggling.
