Moisturising for Dry Skin

Here, we’ll be answering a few of the most commonly asked questions about moisturising dry skin and how to combat any issues you might face as the temperature starts to dip.

Even though we try our hardest to keep the warm weather vibes come autumn, the cold outside creeps in and can cause havoc for your skin. Men whose skin is a bit dry in the summer months can find themselves even worse off come October onwards. A mix of environmental and lifestyle elements come together to dry out skin and leave it feeling and looking less than its best.

What can you put on your face for dry skin?

Your face comes into contact with a number of elements that can cause the skin to become dry. Cold weather, smoking, exposure to harsh soaps, and even certain medical conditions can all cause dry skin on the face. It can be tempting to keep washing your face in order to clean it and give it the best chance of healing, however excessive washing can be just as bad as not washing it at all.

The answer is moisturiser. Moisturiser is there to give hydration and help to rebalance your skin, making it soft and smooth. However, not all moisturisers are created equal and choosing one that suits your skin type is the best way to ensure good results. Most men have a mix of skin types on their face, perhaps only noticing dryness in certain areas. Choose a moisturiser that has been specifically designed for your skin type – we recommend one made for sensitive skin so as to not aggravate the dryness.

How do you moisturise sensitive skin?

You should moisturise both in the morning and evening after cleaning your face with a soap with as few chemicals as possible. Once the face is clean, massage your moisturiser over your face paying particular attention to the dry areas.

Whilst morning moisturising preps your skin for outside factors, moisturising in the evening allows it to soak in overnight, adding extra hydration. Be aware of the ingredients in your moisturiser and try and stay away from alcohols, dioxane, and petroleum.

What is best for very dry skin?

If you have very dry skin, you should grow your skincare routine to include a mask and a cleanser. Again, choosing a range specifically designed to help sensitive skin that contains beneficial ingredients is the best way to help protect your skin in terms of its natural makeup as well as external factors like weather and pollution. You might think a face scrub would have an adverse effect on dry skin – when we think of the word scrub, we often think of harshness. However, if you opt for one that is designed for sensitive skin, it is a gentler option that most. Our Sensitive Face Scrub contains quinoa, baobab oil, oat oil, and willow herb to gently exfoliate the skin. It removes dead cells to leave it feeling soft and fresh.

What helps a dry sensitive face?

There are a few steps you can take yourself to try and minimise dry skin, although oftentimes it’s par for the course when the weather changes. A few things you could try include:

  • Use warm water to wash your face rather than hot or cold. Sometimes, water on both sides of the heat spectrum can have negative effects. Cold water, for example, isn’t as good at getting rid of grime and dirt, and hot water can damage the capillaries. As Goldilocks said, warm is just right.
  • Blot your face dry with your bath towel rather than rub it. Towel is a harsh material and rubbing on your face to get it dry can drag the skin and add to the dryness. Dabbing it dry instead will help maintain the moisture you’ve collected in the shower but won’t scrape the skin.
  • In the cold weather, it can be tempting to shove your face right up to the closest open fireplace but that will definitely help dry it out. You can stay warm and cosy without having to sit right up close to sources of heat so bear that in mind.
