How to Choose the Right Shaving Gel
A good shaving gel can make all the difference to your grooming routine. While some men choose to keep things simple with soap and water, using a shaving gel can help make your daily shave smoother and cleaner. This, in turn, helps your skin and reduces the chance of irritation or even flakiness.
Let’s look at some of the questions we get asked about shaving gel and why you should choose carefully.
What is shave gel used for?
Men’s facial hair is often tough and wiry, making it a challenge to have a perfectly clean shave. Shaving gel acts as a lubricant that creates a barrier between skin and blade so your razor can glide cleanly and effectively over your hair without friction.
A good shaving gel will also provide you with a soothing feeling post-shave, without weighing the skin down.
Is shaving gel necessary?
As we mentioned, some men choose to use soap and warm water and some men use an electric shaver every day. Although these both work fine, you’re not giving your skin that cushioning layer to ensure a comfortable and close shave. . Some soap can contain harsh ingredients that strip the skin of moisture, so make sure your using a shave soap and whipping it up with a shave brush (vegan, of course). Electric shavers don’t get as close as bladed razor so you’re going to be managing stubble rather than getting a close shave.
We recommend using a shaving gel, cream or foam so you can enjoy a better shave, and one that leaves your face clear of stubble right down to the root.
Is shaving gel better than foam?
The main difference between shaving gel and foam is how much it lathers. Foam has a heavy lather, whereas gel is more lubricating. Another benefit of shaving gel over foam is its transparency; you can see the skin underneath which can help you when you’re shaping your beard or moustache.
If you have naturally dry or sensitive skin, it’s may be worth trying a gel as it will help the razor glide smoothly over the skin rather than potentially catching on hairs and creating irritation. Our Sensitive Shave Gel has been specifically designed for men with sensitive skin, complete with baobab oil, oat oil, and willow herb to help soothe sensitive skin.
We have created a foaming shave gel that offers the best of both worlds by giving you the lubrication you need as well as a good lather.
Is shave soap better than cream?
If you’re not sure about shaving gel and want to go for something with more of a lather, a shaving cream is a good choice. Shaving soaps are also an option. Make sure you get the best foam out of the product by using it in conjunction with a shave brush. Add warm water to your brush and whip up a frenzy with your shave soap. It’s pretty satisfying and you feel like an old school barber.
We wouldn’t recommend using a standard soap to shave however, as they are often not designed for the skin on your face and won’t soften your stubble enough for the razor to work to its full potential.
