Here at Bulldog we always try to do the right thing and we are committed to minimising our impact on the environment.
We are proud to say that Bulldog’s Original Moisturiser – our hero product and best seller, we sell one every minute – is now certified as a CarbonNeutral® Product in the UK. This means that its carbon emissions have been reduced to zero in accordance with The CarbonNeutral Protocol. That’s right, working with our partners at Natural Capital Partners, we have completely offset the carbon emissions that are produced during the production and distribution of all our Original Moisturisers in the UK. This includes the extraction and processing of materials and packaging, manufacturing and distribution of the product.
Acre Amazonian Rainforest Project.
To offset the carbon that is produced by our Original Moisturiser, we have chosen to support the Acre Amazonian Rainforest Conservation project in Brazil. The Brazilian state of Acre is currently 90% forested, but if current rates of deforestation continue this could decline to 65% by 2030. To combat this destruction, the Acre Amazonian Rainforest Conservation project – with the support of Bulldog Skincare and others – is working with local communities to help prevent deforestation and protect some of the world’s most biodiverse habitats. Its overarching objective is to help develop alternative models of economic development while preventing deforestation, primarily caused by forest being converted to cattle pasture.
What does this project do?
The project prevents deforestation across 105,000 hectares of pristine rainforest in the Amazon basin by promoting sustainable economic livelihoods. Through granting land tenure and providing agricultural training to local communities, trees are kept standing, drawing down carbon from the atmosphere and protecting the area’s rich biodiversity.
Understanding Our Impact
We are really proud that our Original Moisturiser is now accredited as CarbonNeutral® but we won’t be stopping here, this is just the beginning. Carrying out a full assessment of our hero product has allowed us to better understand the impact it and our other products have on the environment. Now that we know the impact our products have, we can and will be taking action to reduce their pawprint.
A move that we’ve already made is moving to sugarcane-based plastic for our tubes. Working with Natural Capital Partners we have calculated that using sugarcane plastic – instead of a standard fossil fuel based plastic – means that our emissions for each Original Moisturiser are a lovely 19 per cent less. Now that’s pretty sweet.
What about glass?
On our quest to leave no stone unturned, we also investigated what the impact of using glass packaging for our Original Moisturiser would be. It wasn’t pretty. Using glass instead of our sugarcane plastic packaging would mean that our emissions per bottle would increase by approximately 65 per cent. While glass does have a lower carbon footprint per gram, the weight of the packaging required to hold 100ml of product would be far higher than our sugarcane plastic packaging. Moving that glass around would result in significantly greater emissions. We’ll be sticking with the sugarcane plastic for now.
How we manufacture.
For Bulldog’s moisturisers and other emulsions, we also use an approach called “Single-Vessel Quenching”. This involves only heating part of the water required to create the product and making the mixture in one vessel. This means we are not heating two vessels and we also use the remaining water to cool the combined mixture. By only heating part of the water, we save a lot of energy. For our Original Moisturiser, we calculate that this saves 60% of the energy versus traditional manufacturing methods.
Watch this space!
We’ll be carrying out assessments on more of our products and will be doing regular reviews to see how our environmental impact is reducing.
Improving our sustainability is an ongoing journey – a journey we’re delighted to be on.
